How Often Does Test and Tag Actually Need to Happen?

There's no single blanket interval under AS/NZS 3760 — it depends on how the equipment is used and its operating environment. Equipment in factories, workshops or construction-type environments is generally tested every 3 months, while lower-risk office and retail equipment can often be tested every 12 months, or longer where a documented risk assessment supports it. Getting the classification wrong in either direction either wastes money on unnecessary testing or leaves you non-compliant, so we assess your site rather than applying a generic default.

Rcd Testing and Switchboard Thermal Imaging

counter_1

RCD Testing

Fixed RCDs on commercial switchboards should have trip time and current verified periodically — commonly every 6 months — with results recorded. A safety switch that doesn't trip within its rated time isn't protecting anyone, regardless of how new it looks.
counter_2

Thermal imaging

An infrared scan of your switchboard picks up abnormal heat at connections, breakers and busbars long before it becomes a visible fault. Loose connections and overloaded circuits generate excess heat well before they cause a fire or an outage — this is one of the highest-value, lowest-disruption checks we do on a commercial site.
Commercial Electrical Compliance

Emergency and Exit Lighting — a Fire Safety Statement Item

AS/NZS 2293 requires emergency and exit lighting to be function tested every 6 months and discharge tested annually to confirm each light will actually operate for its rated duration during a power failure. This isn't optional paperwork — it's checked as part of your building's annual fire safety statement, and failed emergency lighting is one of the more common reasons a commercial or strata building fails that inspection.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    FAQs

By ensuring your property is inspected by High Demand Electrical, you are taking a significant step towards securing its safety and enhancing its efficiency. Reach out today to learn more about how we can assist you in maintaining a safe and compliant electrical environment.

How often does test and tag need to be done in a commercial workplace?

Under AS/NZS 3760, intervals depend on equipment use and environment — typically every 3 months for factory/workshop equipment and up to every 12 months for lower-risk office equipment. We set a schedule based on your actual site.

How often should RCDs be tested in a commercial building?

Fixed RCDs should have trip time and current verified periodically, commonly every 6 months, with written test records supplied for every device on your board.

Is emergency and exit lighting testing a legal requirement?

Yes — AS/NZS 2293 requires function testing every 6 months and discharge testing annually, and this is checked as part of your building's fire safety statement.

What does switchboard thermal imaging actually detect?

Abnormal heat at connections, breakers and busbars caused by loose connections or overloaded circuits — often visible well before it becomes a fire or an outage.

Who is responsible for electrical compliance in a commercial lease?

Set by your lease, but under WHS law the PCBU in control of the premises carries the duty. Landlords commonly cover base building items; tenants cover their own equipment and fitout circuits.

How much does commercial electrical compliance cost in Sydney?

Depends on site size, appliance count, switchboard complexity and testing frequency. We provide a fixed quote after a site walkthrough, with scheduled programs for predictable ongoing costs.

"Chris was the professional, punctual and his services are exceptional. Chris re-wired the entire property, chased the electrical work in the bathroom and kitchen areas, left a clean and tidy environment and his open communication and dialogue was a welcomed experience.

When he quoted an arrival time, he was there. He talked me through what he was doing, and provided feedback/suggestions on how to tackle any issues. I felt part of the process, as opposed to being another Customer.

A pleasure to deal with, and I recommend his services. I'll be definitely calling him again with any electrical work I need done."
